According to a legend, a knight and his lady walked along a river. He bent to pick her a flower, a forget-me-not, but lost the balance because of his armor and fell into the water. While he drowned itself, he threw the flower towards his lady by shouting " do not forget me! ". Since then, this flower is associated with the eternal memory (souvenir éternel in french).
